4th International Congress on Planted Forests
The topics of the field trips in several routes to the North and South of China include valuable wood production, intensification of plantation, multiple-purpose management of planted forests, planted forest landscape, Three-North Shelterbelt Forest, local culture specialty, etc.
Northern Line: Ecological public welfare planted forests in North China
(Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm and Mulan Weichang Management Bureau of State-owned Forest Farm of Hebei province)
The Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm of Hebei province (hereinafter referred to as Saihanba Forest) is located in the southern margin of Hunshandake Sandy Land in Inner Mongolia, which covers 92,000 hectares, had by the 1950s become barren due to excessive logging, allowing sand to blow into Beijing from the northern deserts. In 1962, the Saihanba Forest was established, and hundreds of foresters began planting trees in the area. Three generations of these foresters have increased forest cover from 11 percent to 80 percent. The million mu of forest sea has successfully blocked the succession process of forest to grassland and grassland to desert degradation in this area. At present, the Saihanba Forest has successfully built a large-scale forest ecosystem base, which has changed the local natural landscape. The research has accumulated valuable experience of afforestation in this alpine region, establishing a successful model for sand control, artificial afforestation and improvement of ecological environment in northern China.
The Mulan Weichang Management Bureau of State-owned Forest Farm of Hebei province (hereinafter referred to as Mulan Forest), covering 105900 hectares with forest covers 82.2%, is the main cradle of the Luan River. After more than 50 years of development, this forest has become an important ecological support to block the southward impact of sandstorms. In recent decade, the Mulan Forest has been actively exploring innovative forest management techniques by applying the concept of close-to-nature forest management based on its own conditions, establishing “Demonstration Area on Forest Management in Northern China” covering more than 10,000 hectares with more than 40 different models.
